SUMMARY:ELA Mid-Atlantic Conference: Winterthur
DESCRIPTION:Restoration Sponsor \nExamining Nature as Medicine:              \nDesigning Landscapes that Improve Quality of Life and the Human Psyche\nThis conference explores the intersection of ecological landscape design and its effect on human beings. Sometimes referred to as Social Landscape Design or Ecological Psychology\, emerging research is taking a closer look at the interaction of people and landscapes. Join ELA on November 15th for leading-edge research\, compelling case studies\, and practical strategies to consider in your future designs. \nIn both urban and suburban locales\, rising health concerns have prompted research on how the human body changes when introduced to planned landscapes. Compelling conclusions point to the benefits of evaluating the intersections between specific elements in ecological landscapes and human health\, specifically in the context of urban\, public spaces. \nAs an ecosystem of people\, nature\, and infrastructure\, the built landscape can become a prescription to improve human health. \nThis landscape trend in urban social-ecology is a design imperative to create gardens informed by nature in order to improve the environment\, benefit human health\, and develop cities that are resilient\, healthy\, sustainable\, and livable.

SUMMARY:Lancaster County Water Week
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lancaster County Conservancy in Celebration of Clean Water! \nLancaster County is blessed with 1\,500 stream miles\, but 47% of these streams are polluted and cannot support their original aquatic life. Waterways are at the core of Lancaster County. They drive economic opportunity and growth that benefits our local economy and agriculture. Our rivers and streams are the source of our drinking water and recreation to be enjoyed by all. To protect these waters\, we want to strengthen the sense of stewardship in Lancaster County.  Water connects us all! \nWater Week was conceived along the banks of the Conestoga River by friends Fritz Schroeder (Lancaster County Conservancy) and Spike Brant (Nimblist.) While kayaking along the river offers much beauty and solace\, it is also a front row seat to the amount of erosion\, pollution\, and disregard some have for this amazing fresh water resource. With this in mind they set out to create a campaign that CELEBRATES the unique waterways of Lancaster County\, EDUCATES the public about the challenges we face and opportunities we can create\, and ACTIVATES people to take action in their watersheds and communities.

SUMMARY:Restoring Nature’s Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Doug Tallamy\nSpecialized relationships between animals and plants are the norm in nature rather than the exception. It is specialized relationships that provide our birds with insects and berries\, that disperse our bloodroot seeds\, that pollinate our goldenrod\, and so on. Plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. Tallamy will explain why this is so\, why specialized food relationships determine the stability and complexity of the local food webs that support animal diversity\, why our yards and gardens are essential parts of the ecosystems that sustain us\, how we can use our residential landscapes to connect the isolated habitat fragments around us and produce valuable ecosystem services\, and what we can do to make our landscapes living ecosystems once again. Managing landscapes in this crowded world carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that we can no longer ignore.
